What is a Lieutenant?

Lieutenants are NPC companions who fight alongside you on the battlefield. They can either be animals or humans and each has their own fighting techniques.

How do I get one?

Players are automatically given a basic lieutenant for battles even if they do not currently have one employed. Acquiring a persistent lieutenant will take just a little more work. Lieutenants are occasionally found among neutral enemies (marked in yellow). You can acquire lieutenants by defeating them in battle. Once you defeat them, they drop a lieutenant spirit that you can collect. At the end of a victorious battle, the lieutenant spirit in your possession will seek service with you. If your side loses or draws the battle, then you will not be able to keep the lieutenant. Characters can have up to eight lieutenants, but only one can join you on the battlefield at a time.

When you return to your quarters, the lieutenant will be waiting for you and asks you to employ them. Accepting their request will make them your lieutenant. A player can have up to eight lieutenants in total; however, only one will follow you into battle.

What can a Lieutenant do?

In addition to keeping you company, lieutenants provide multiple advantages on the battlefield. Lieutenants have two stats: Affinity and Motivation. A high Affinity means they will give you items often and a high Motivation means they will give you better quality items. Winning in battle and feeding your Lieutenants will affect their Affinity and Motivation. When your Lieutenant is far away from you in battle you can press the Summon Lieutenant button (comma key) to have them return to your side. Holding down the Summon Lieutenant button when your lieutenant is nearby, will increase their Musou Gauge. If you press it when the lieutenants Musou Gauge is full, it will trigger their Musou Attack.
