For those that enjoy a bit of retro-inspired arcade action virtual reality (VR) developers have got you covered with titles such as Battlezone, Spartaga, Blasters of the Universe and many more. Now Welsh developer Galactig has announced its take on 80s fuelled videogaming with a frantic shooter called Neon which is due for release this month on Oculus Rift.

Neon puts players at the helm of an ion cannon in a gravitationally affected environment inside the suns core. Here they must prevent solar flares by shooting down neon isotopes using positive and negative ions located on the left and right triggers. What this means is that one gun is pink whilst the other is blue, with each one only able to shoot the corresponding isotopes.

Featuring vector polygonal lines and surfaces illuminated by pulsating neon lighting, Neon features 42 levels to play through that have been designed so they’re easy enough for VR beginners to get the hang of, whilst whose players more well versed in VR will find the difficulty suitably increasing to offer challenging gameplay. Later levels will feature stronger gravitational forces, more isotopes, and new kinds of challenges, with big boss levels also included.

As Neon is classic retro-inspired arcade shooter a selection of power-ups such as slo-mo and shockwave are available to help players with those more difficult levels and there will also be a solar blossom mode.

Should you complete all the levels then Infinity Mode will be unlocked plus there will be an option to enter a competition to win a Neon prize bundle including limited edition vinyl of the soundtrack. This utilised the talents of three music producers (Forward Memory, Dynamix, and I Am Galactic), so that Neon features an original soundtrack of ambient electronica and electrotech which complements the modern-retro styling of the experience.

Galactig hasn’t given an exact date for Neon’s release, simply stating it would be towards the end of November. Checkout the first trailer for the upcoming title below.
