Comparisons: BOTS is a brand new type of game featuring robot characters and combat. The only game that even slightly resembles the concept of BOTS that I have played or even seen before is ATC online. The difference is that BOTS has a story mode called Sector mode, along with a player vs. player mode and a base. vs. base mode. I believe ATC only had player vs. player which made it get boring, while on BOTS switching between game types keeps it fresh for weeks and weeks. Other then that, BOTS is a very unique game. The player vs. player system is very different as well; it focuses more on player¡¯s skills rather then their level and equipment.
First Impression: My first impression of BOTS was that it was kind of boring at first, playing levels over and over again. But over time I found a lot of friends in the amazingly nice community, and became friends with a lot of the GMs and administrators, who I found very nice and active in the community. I thought the graphics were great and once I got into the two other game types rather then just all Sector, I found it to be very fun and exciting.
Graphics: 8 The graphics are very good, especially for the low graphic card requirement to play. They aren¡¯t dark creepy graphics, they are brighter colors. They are great, but of course there is room for improvement. I like them mainly because they are detailed and not creepy graphics. The reason I didn¡¯t give it a higher score though is because of the lag that these graphics can cause at times. Your frames per second may drop dramatically for a couple seconds when some of the animation frames such as explosions or fire come up. Therefore I took the graphics down from a 9, to an 8.
Sound: 8.5 The sound is average in my opinion, nothing special. I personally like the sound effects a lot more then the background music, and have grown to find the sound effects an essential. It can help you tell where your enemy is, what they¡¯re doing, and if they¡¯re approaching or running away.
Game play: 9 At first, the controls of the game are kind of weird and strange. They take a little getting used to, but I advise that you do not change them; over time they become very comfortable and are the perfect controls for this game. But if you feel differently, you can always change the controls which is very convenient. The game also has a nice feel to it, you don¡¯t really need to study the levels to get good at them. It doesn¡¯t take much skill to be able to do most things in the game; you naturally progress as your character levels up. The game play is also fast paced action which I assume most people enjoy in an MMORPG. There is no automated point, click, and attack battles. You must control every single move that your bot makes.
Community: 8 The community in BOTS is great. There is a lot of higher leveled people who allow lower levels to tag along just for the heck of it, and most of the pros and higher levels are very nice and willing to help new comers out. The forums are also nice and inviting and I recommend them to all players since you can get help with whatever you need there. As far as the guild system goes, it¡¯s not the most amazing thing but the game is still in Open Beta. By the looks of it, some things are reserved for the Full Release which will allow guilds to go above their current capacity of 10 players, which will improve the guild system a lot. The chat system gets very annoying, since there are in game macros that people can easily spam. They also need to update the profanity filter a little bit, and make the chat boxes a little larger. You can play either by yourself or with up to 7 other people. In a way, this is good and bad. Sometimes I would like to play with more people, but at the same time 8 people is plenty. It also helps reduce lag. There is no marriage system in this game, but there is a friend¡¯s list system. The friends list, just like the guild system, has a capacity of 10 people which gets very annoying. At Full Release I expect this to change and improve. When the game hits Full Release and the improvements are made, I would probably rate the community a 9.
Value: 9.5 The game will get very repetitive at first; just playing sector level re-runs for hours on end to keep leveling up. But at the beginning it is also very easy to level up, making it less of an annoyance. Once you get to around level 25 or so, you will experience the fun of player vs. player mode and base vs. base mode. You will then find yourself rotating in between these three game types so the game stays fresh and enjoyable for a long period of time. If you ever get bored, you can always take a break which many players do. There is updates every now and then which make the game more fun, as well as a ton of upcoming events including tournaments and forum events. All and all, the game can get boring but usually doesn¡¯t if you don¡¯t overdose on it, especially on just one game type. But if you¡¯re not a fan of player vs. player, this game will most likely get boring for you. But once you get some friends on game, playing Sector levels over and over doesn¡¯t stay boring; it gets fun because you chat while you do it, making it entertaining.
Unique Features: This game gets extra points from me because of its originality and the fact that it¡¯s based more on skill then level and equipment. It¡¯s a new revolution of gaming that will keep you entertained for weeks. Whether you¡¯re looking for a long-term game, or a game to keep you occupied while you wait for another game, BOTS is a great game and I encourage all to try it. I have seen some new items and things that will be out at Full Release, and that also scores extra points. The fact that there is a lot of tournaments in BOTS, hosted by Acclaim and by players, also gets extra points. This will keep you even more entertained if you¡¯re a player vs. player fanatic.
Personal Rating: Great, definitely worth a try, especially for those who love player vs. player combat.
Overall Rating: 9 Very good, and it will only get better later on when it¡¯s more developed and more tournaments are being hosted. The community is increasing everyday, and I expect the rating to be up to 9.5 by the end of the year. |
