Close Beta Review ( from:http://www.piratekingonline.com/forum )
King of the Pirate Online or Pirate King Online has been finally translated to English and I got a Close Beta slot. So what is it all about? Well, it¡¯s about you or a group. No one gets to fulfill anything. No princess to rescue, no world to save. It¡¯s just all about you, the world, and the sea. If you are pretty creative, you may create your own journal as you sail through the high seas. However, the characters have some story. It¡¯s about one group composed of four people, one big buffy guy, one dashing debonair, one hot sexy chick, and a peculiar kid. Four of them grouped together to embark on a journey of piracy. Well, at least the character story is pretty much open-ended.
Replacing Rum with Milk
Simply colorful I might say. The game is very very very colorful¡ for a pirate game. I believe that is a bad thing. Hearing about Pirate King made me a bit excited since it¡¯s all about ¡°pirates¡± and the word King made me think that it is about competition. Something like, ¡°who will rise up from a bundle of wet soggy pirates and become a king?¡± Never the less, it¡¯s named that way. Well the concept is a bit like pirates too.
Eye for an Aye
So, yeah the graphics are pretty much kiddy for a ¡°pirate¡± game and the characters look pretty for pirates, well except for the Big guy. Boy, he looks so unexplainably ugly! Well, we didn¡¯t complain about Ragnarok Online right? Since it¡¯s pretty much the end of the world yet cute avatars are running around. Right? RIGHT?!?
Objectively speaking the 3d engine is nice and the character detail was good. Even at a rundown PC such as mine, the game bode perfectly well at high graphical settings. The surroundings are not bad either, there were pleasant surroundings and well made environments, but the trees were pretty much a bother when I played it. They won¡¯t turn invisible and made me sick turning the camera every now and then. Don¡¯t get me started with the camera, it¡¯s reserved for later.
Bring out Your Sword you Scurvy Pirate!
You start off half naked with the items just hiding in your inventory. There will be a Newbie quest for you to introduce you to the gameplay, but it is better that you read the main website for more informative tutorials on how to manipulate your characters. Pretty much the gameplay is the same as with the MMORPG. Just point and click. However, what separates this game from other MMORPG are the life skills and the part on how you can earn money without grinding or hunting.
When you¡¯re tired of grinding, you may do some life skills to make your character richer. You can either mine, woodchop, fish with your boat or scavange with your boat. Commerce is also another way to make money, whereas you trade goods with other islands to earn profit. Can anybody say ¡°kaching?¡±
Anyway, what I hate most about the game is that darn old camera view. I mean Rangarok Online has more camera movements that this one. But I was told that the camera view will be is under development. Thank goodness for that.
Rundown of the Scores
I will let the scores do the talking.
Graphics ¨C 6/10
3d engine is good but not that good.
Ambience ¨C 8/10
The sound was fairly amusing but it gets annoying because of the heavy grinding.
Longetivity ¨C 7/10
Again, due to heavy grinding, this game tend to get boring at higher levels. But with added extra features such as life skills, it could make you stay for a bit longer
Gameplay ¨C 7/10
Easy to understand. No need to stress out your brain cells.
