Outpost
As the three
races encroached into the Ground
Zero region they came upon the
ancient, abandoned Outposts, remnants
of the armies of the Old World.
Those that study history believe
the armies constructed these Outposts
to help contain the Contamination
and other strange occurrences
in and around the region, and
especially the giant crater that
marks Ground Zero. Long abandoned,
the Outposts were not defenseless;
ancient computers still maintained
the powerful defensive batteries,
destroying any lifeform not deemed
friendly that stumbled into the
Outpost. Unfortunately for the
three races, they were not considered
to be friendly.
South of
the burgeoning city of Tocado
lies the blasted radioactive field
of rubble and slag known as the
Proving Grounds. Many young, inexperienced
Children of the Changed travel
to the Proving Grounds where they
can gather, test their bravery,
and prove themselves to their
peers amongst the four Tribes.
The youths treat these challenges
very seriously, considering them
to be a form of training for the
Rites of the Ascension; a promotion
to the rank of a true Warrior
of the Tribes.
Northeast
of Fort Logan lies one of the
most extraordinary weather phenomena
to occur since the arrival of
the Contamination and the Betrayal.
Located near Detton Pass (what
most Biomeks refer to as "Canyon
Run"), this area has been
under the influence of what can
only be called a permanent stationary
cold front. Recent research conducted
by the Archives Section indicates
that at some point following the
Betrayal an immense cold-air weather
system flowed down from the north,
dropping the ambient temperature
rapidly and pelting the earth
with constant blinding blizzards
and powerful ice storms.
Once having
proven themselves as a strong,
combat-ready Candidate, Biomeks
are frequently ordered to the
Malachite Mines area for intensive
operations meant to acclimatize
a Biomek to the rigors of the
Central Wastelands. One of the
richest deposits of copper ore
in the known world, the Malachite
Mines area is a perfect staging
area for Candidates. Here the
Biomek Order administers the mining
operations and the resident group
of Pikes through the use of Candidates
and a small scattering of supervisors,
while deflecting any kind of threat
to the valuable production of
copper with massive firepower.
Originally
the area known as the Hestia Back
Range was built for use as an
outdoor military test facility.
Located near Ark I, the Hestia
Back Range sits in a rocky wide
bowl, buttressed against a series
of cliffs and mountains to the
west and east, with the highway
running down the valley in the
middle. After using the area for
as a testing ground for terrestrial
and orbital weapons, the Frontier
Location Command (FLC) moved a
series of drone launch platforms
into the Range - remote devices
that proved to be a boon in training
and recruit indoctrination. In
fact, FLC routinely uses the Back
Range as a basic training area
for Hestia Company Candidates,
where they can fully evaluate
a recruit's individual disciplines
in real battle conditions before
moving them on to Upside.
The Biomeks have embraced technology and intellect to adapt and survive the Contamination. Like the Mutants, they now care little of the hazards of the Contamination, as they commonly replace vulnerable body parts with immune mechanized prosthetics. The essential Biomek view is that any person, place or thing that is not with them is against them. Logically, if the Biomek Order can"enhance" every suitable life-form, they can then enjoy a hard won peace: Pax Bionicus.
Human
Under the organization of the Hestia Company, the remaining Humans spent many decades living underground in extensive Arks. Originally composed of the world's power elite society, Humans were responsible for the apocalyptic release of the world's cache of weapons of mass destruction in an attempt to cleanse the Earth of Contamination. The plan didn't exactly work, as Humans beginning to emerge from the Arks are discovering.
Mutant
"The Change came upon us quietly. Even those that would become the first of The Changed did not yet realize their destiny, the destiny brought to them when the sky rained stars upon the world. The first of us were very much like Man, only the color of our flesh separated us. It was enough. To Man our differences were plagues, The Change was an unfortunate affliction to be cured with their science. To them we were helpless victims. They did not understand The Change, or what it meant for us all. They soon learned the truth, and their folly brought the time of troubles to us all in a Night of Righteous Fire..."
